WHAT’S HAPPENING?
To continue meeting the needs of our neighbors, GoochlandCares has purchased the property next door to our current building. The address is 3009 River Road West. It is 2.4 acres, nearly doubling the size of the GoochlandCares campus. This is a significant step that gives us more space to enhance our services and fulfill our mission.
The previous bank building on the property was demolished in Fall of 2025. The building was outdated and unsafe to use.
NO new construction will begin immediately. This space will be transformed to better serve our community, and there are no current plans for new construction. We are seeking input from the community and sharing updates here.
GoochlandCares will remain fully operational, and our programs will not be interrupted. Safety is a top priority, and we’re working closely with our construction teams to minimize disruption.
Project Updates
October 29th, 2025
Demolition Has Been Completed
GoochlandCares will continue minor improvement projects on the property (and hopes to even grow some grass soon!), but the major demolition has been completed. The former bank building has been removed, and the hole created has been packed with fill dirt. The parking lot in the back of the property remains, and will be used as overflow/staff parking AND by the Clothes Closet to process incoming donations. We are excited for what’s to come, and appreciate our construction partners and the community’s ongoing support of the project. FAQ
Is this going to change the mission of GoochlandCares?
No. Our mission will stay the same: to provide basic human services and health care to our Goochland neighbors in need. This expansion gives us more space to improve our programs.
WHY did GoochlandCares purchase the property next door?
Our programs continue to grow as we serve more people in need. For example, the Food Pantry served an average of 245 families a week in 2018, and has grown to more than 360 families a week in 2025. More space means more opportunities to support clients, volunteers, and community partners. The location is ideal because it’s right next door, allowing us to make room for our services without disrupting operations.
Can community members share their ideas for the space? How can I support the project?
Yes! We’re gathering local input through Community Input Sessions, surveys, conversations, and events. Is GoochlandCares building something new right away?
Not yet. We are taking time to hear from clients, staff, and the community before deciding what should be built. We want the space to address the critical needs of GoochlandCares’ programs and reflect the real needs of Goochland.
Is GoochlandCares expanding its programs?
We do not have finalized plans for the property, but more space gives us the flexibility to grow as community needs grow. We are already using 100% of our current space. We will continue to provide services that address the critical hunger, health care, housing, safety, and basic needs of our neighbors.
How was the purchase of the property funded?
The purchase was made possible through a combination of generous donor support and the responsible fiscal stewardship of our Board. Future development will likely involve many funding sources and community donations.
