“Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services has been a blessing to me and my family.” Roger and his wife and children, have lived in Goochland for over 35 years.

Roger worked hard all his life, including 21 years at VDOT. Even after being diagnosed with kidney disease, he never slowed down. Then, in 2009, his kidneys failed. He had to go on dialysis three times a week. Unfortunately, he didn’t have enough years to retire from the state. His only choice was to go on disability and Medicare, cutting his income in half. His wife was only able to work part time.

They still had the same bills to pay to provide for their family including the mortgage, medicines, food, and gas. They didn’t qualify for food stamps. Tough choices had to be made such as canceling his wife’s health insurance and choosing to pay for medicine over food most months. Since registering with GFCFS, Roger and his family have received much needed assistance from among the eleven programs we offer. His monthly disability check is simply not enough, so Roger shops regularly for his family at the Food Pantry and the Clothes Closet.

He also received critical home repair on his 80-year-old home and financial counseling to lower his mortgage. “We are from Goochland. Our family and friends are from Goochland. Our church is here. This is our home. Thanks to GFCFS, volunteers, staff and donors, we can stay in our community. I don’t know where we would be right now without GFCFS.”
