Tax-Smart Ways to Give
Giving to GoochlandCares can make a powerful impact on our neighbors, and may also provide tax advantages for you. If you have an IRA or stock account, here are three simple, tax-smart ways to give:
1. Gifts of Stock/Securities/Mutual Funds
Possible Benefits:
- -Avoid capital gains taxes on the appreciated value
- -Receive a charitable income tax deduction for the full fair market value
To make a stock gift, contact your broker and ask them to transfer shares to:
Davenport & Co. through Pershing DTC #0443
Credit to account DA4002352
GoochlandCares tax ID: 54-1967650
Please request the delivering firm to include donor’s name on transfer instructions.
2. Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) – Age 70½+
If you’re 70½ or older, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from your IRA to GoochlandCares. A QCD allows you to give up to $100,000 per year directly to charity without increasing your taxable income.
Possible Benefits:
- -Donate directly from your IRA, no need to withdraw funds first
- -Avoid paying income taxes on the distribution
OR
3. Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) – Age 73+
If you’re 73 or older, the IRS requires you to take annual Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from your IRA. By donating your RMD (through a QCD), you can satisfy this requirement while making a meaningful, tax-free contribution to GoochlandCares.
Instead of withdrawing your RMD, paying taxes, and donating what’s left, a direct transfer means your entire gift supports local families, children, and individuals working to rebuild their lives.
How to Give
For QCDs or RMD transfers, ask your IRA custodian to send funds directly to:
GoochlandCares
2999 River Road West
Goochland, VA 23063
Tax ID: 54-1967650
